Re: [PSUBS-MAILIST] Desert Star Sport

I think the effectiveness of a fish-finder as a sub-tracker is going to depend upon the angle of the echo cone produced by the transducer. Too narrow a cone and you will have to travel over the sub to locate it, which will be anything but effective as you'll have to employ a grid-search to chase it down. A forward-scan sonar would make more sense. Assuming the sub shows up as a recognizable target and the range of the unit is decent, you could literally turn the boat 360 until you located the sub. I think a forward-scan sonar would probably be better than even side-scan for this purpose.

How do they work for a chase boat to see where the Sub is?

For a surface boat to track a sub, could a regular "fish finder " be used ? A sub would be a pretty big "fish" and would show up clearly on the little screen.
