The reed switches could be potted easily with epoxy and Cat5 cable would supply 7 locations plus ground. I can't say whether a reed-switch is any more attractive than any other solution, although your LM3914 solution looks pretty compact and simple. I may have missed the discussion, but what is the solution to waterproofing the potentiometer? Or is that where the flat unit Alan found comes in?
